Development of a web-based lifecycle management system for Swisscom routers and TV boxes, with ongoing enhancements and technology upgrades.

Technical Challenges

  • Managing the lifecycle of thousands of network devices
  • Transitioning from legacy technologies to modern frameworks
  • Ensuring system reliability for critical operations
  • Maintaining and extending a long-running system

Solutions

Developed and continuously improved a web-based lifecycle management system. Started with Oracle DB, JavaScript, and Java Wicket, later transitioning parts of the system to AngularJS for improved user experience and maintainability.

Outcomes

  • Successfully managed the lifecycle of Swisscom's device fleet
  • Improved operational efficiency for device management teams
  • Modernized the technology stack while maintaining system stability
  • Extended system capabilities to support new device types and processes

Project Overview

This project involved the development and ongoing enhancement of a web-based lifecycle management system for Swisscom’s routers and TV boxes. Initially deployed in 2012, the system underwent continuous development and technology upgrades over a period of five years, transitioning from Java Wicket to incorporate AngularJS for improved user experience.

Technical Challenges

The implementation presented several significant challenges:

  • Large-Scale Device Management: Creating a system capable of tracking and managing the lifecycle of thousands of network devices across Switzerland.
  • Technology Evolution: Transitioning from the original technology stack (Oracle DB, JavaScript, Java Wicket) to incorporate more modern frameworks like AngularJS without disrupting operations.
  • System Reliability: Ensuring high availability and reliability for a system critical to Swisscom’s operations.
  • Long-Term Maintenance: Maintaining and extending a long-running system while keeping the codebase clean and manageable.

Solutions Implemented

To address these challenges, we:

  1. Developed a comprehensive web-based system for tracking device lifecycle stages from procurement to retirement
  2. Implemented robust database design with Oracle DB to handle large volumes of device data
  3. Created a user-friendly interface initially with Java Wicket, later enhancing with AngularJS components
  4. Established automated testing and deployment processes to ensure system reliability
  5. Designed a modular architecture that allowed for incremental technology upgrades

Outcomes

The project was a success, with the following outcomes:

  • Successfully managed the lifecycle of Swisscom’s extensive device fleet across Switzerland
  • Improved operational efficiency for device management teams through intuitive interfaces and automated workflows
  • Modernized the technology stack while maintaining system stability and reliability
  • Extended system capabilities to support new device types and management processes
  • Provided Swisscom with a reliable platform for device management that evolved with their needs
